I have recently heard of people who answer work at home ads and are told that they will make $17+ an hour taking catalog orders over the phone. To get started, the company will need them to get a second phone line installed and a fax machine. They send you a check to cover the cost of setting this up, but when you get the check it is for more than the amount that you were told it would be.
You are told that it was an "accounting error". The company then asks that you keep the amount you will need to set up the phone and fax, and wire them back the overage. After this it goes like the other counterfeit cashier's check scams . . . you take the check to the bank, they tell you it is a cashier's check and it will clear in 24 hours, you send the money and then a week or more later the bank contacts you to let you know that the check is counterfeit and that you are liable for the entire amount of the check.
