There is someone that uses the email murphy_jones247 and he is a scammer on EHarmony. He says he is from Texas, his wife and parents are deceased, leaving him to raise his 12 year old son named Don who resides in Lagos, Nigeria. He says he works for Chevron as an Oil Rig Executive and is on assignment for the last five months in Saudi Arabia. He claims to be looking for a "mum" for his son Don. Watch the spelling and they have horrible grammar. I believe Murphy Jones consists of at least 3 scammers. They all have a different writing style and you can detect their style by the contents of their sentence. The dumbest one is the one who works during the morning, while in there terms, the more sophisticated, most likely ring leader takes on the night shift. Murphy Jones will give you about 2 to 3 hours on instant message but has to depart around 11:00pm UAE time. Keep you emails in archives you will be able to research the contents for discrepancies and inconsistencies. Ask them sophisticated questions. They will go offline or they will say the computer shut off because they are on an oil rig in the middle of the ocean in order to research your question.

They will ask for a webcam but ask them if they have one, such as I did and their answer was no. Challenge them to send you a postcard or something with Chevron's letterhead on it to a business address or P.O. box. Lastly, they think all Americans are greedy, so they will tell you they are trying to develop an oil company and their contract amount is $11,000,000.00. This is the red flag. Then they will tell you they are a millionaire. Use your common sense then. If this guy is a millionaire why would he be working. They post a picture of an attractive middle age white male on their profile.

My experience lasted a few days because I played along to find out exactly what they wanted. I know there is more than one that pretend to be Murpphy Jones. They didn't get me for money because I am not greedy and someone saying he's a millionaire was not what I was seeking. I reported the scam to EHarmony. If you hear or read the words, Nigeria, Chevron, Oil Rig, Webcam, Angel - don't fall for them. They hate the word monitor, so use that a lot until you are sure. Whatever they ask you from you ask it back from them. And you should be able to weed them out in the first few minutes of conversation.

I've noticed that too. It looks like the scammers go onto the dating sites that give out free trials or free period. Jsmith thanks for the information.

Back when we were hit, I contacted sites that sold classic cars and got many of them to post warnings. I think that getting eHarmony to post a warning would be much harder, but I know that if I paid for the match I would be VERY UPSET if I got matched up with a scammer!

I wouldn't think it would be that difficult for eHarmony to block all IP's from Nigera or the rest of Africa. Since they get paid for the ads they run on their site based on the number of hits they get per hour or per day they will never block out the spammers. eHarmony is profiting to much from all the traffic from the scammers that why would they want to stop it or do anything about it, just like Western Union profits from all the wire transfers to Nigeria.

Over the years I have learned to look at these issue from both sides . . . I agree with you that they could easily block all Nigerian IP addresses, and this would DRAMITICALLY reduce the number of scammers on the site . . . but on the other hand, what if there is that one person in Nigeria who really does want to use eHarmony to find someone and they are blocked just because of where they live? A situation like that has "lawsuit" written all over it for eHarmony. Do you see what I mean?

That is why I have learned that education is the key to fighting these scams. Of course, sites like eHarmony COULD help to educate their members by putting warnings up and listing the "red flags" to look for.

Maybe if people who have been scammed by people on eharmony started pushing them to put up warnings they will listen and put up some information. I figure if people bug the hell out of the site then it will eventually work. It's kind of like that part in the movie Shawshank Redemption where the banker kept bugging the government for money and they eventually gave it to him just to get him to shut up.

"Back in the day" I was one of those people when it came to used/classic car websites, since that is how we were hit . . . I just started with the ones we advertised with, and then started searching out others and told them what was going on and asked them to try and help by warning their users.

i would encourage everyone who has been scammed by someone on eHarmony to join their advice.eharmony.com webpage. i'm posting as much on there as i can - and thankfully (SO FAR) one person has responded that my posts have given them the information they needed to end communication with this person.

we need to get the names, email addresses and any other info out there so that we can keep them from hurting innocent people.

My experience on eHARMony:

1. Eharmony will not refund my money. They promise to do that, then they refuse and ask me to call them and then hang up on me. Next time I call they say I must wait online for 2 hours... and then after 40 minutes of waiting their phone line mysteriously hangs up. Then the next time I call they categorically refuse to refund my money yet the suport person on the email states that they will refund if I call them... Then when I call them they say I've been on a 3 day (three day) trial (which never was noted or found on their site).

2. Their "RelyID" service charged me $5.95 twice and the online verification failed both times yet Eharmony cathegorically refuses to refund the $5.95 (charged twice) and they send me to RelyID and RelyID sends me back to Eharmony.

3. They send me matches with kids while I indicated no kids; they send me matches from far away states while I indicated within 30 miles; Most 90% or more matches CLOSE the match no matter how good my profile is. There's just nothing wrong with me, yet 99% of the "matches" are being closed either right away or after the exhaustive question-answer ordeal and what's the weirdest that your LIKES-DISLIKES (can't stands etc.) must MATCH otherwise your match will close the match! Yet there is no way to keep your "can't stands" list short or blank. They MAKE YOU to select 10 can't stands, which is weirrrrrd! You're very limited with Eharmony on what you can do.

4. Eharmony support makes promises that they never keep ever.

5. Eharmony support is rude and hangs up on you.

6. Going to an Eharmomy site loads malicious atdmt.com files into your computer.

7. EharMONEY.com redirects to Eharmony.com . It's all about money, not about matching you with the right person.

8. 99% of "matches" do not match at all and CLOSE the match on you after you go through all the questions and answers...

9. Eharmony says I've been on a 3-day trial while there's no such thing on their website.

10. Eharmony's RElyID is pre-made to fail that they could get you fax them your sensitive details such as SS#, Photo ID and when you decide not to do that they refuse to refund your money for the RElyID service.
No advance notice is posted that user may need to manually identify themselves to RelyID. You have no choice, once you pay, all you can do is manual verification, you can't get your money back even if RelyID fails, even if they charge you twice or three times!

11. Eharmony sends you non-existing users.

12. Quite often the user's age shown as zero "0" and their location as "none" or wrong.

13. You can find closed matches in your account which you never saw before.

14. In your account you keep on seeing "Your Profile is Not Complete" (you need to verify your id) yet when you try to verify it fails and asks you to fax your Social Security Number, Two of Your Photo ID's etc.
After paying a lot of money for a membership fee you still get this your profile is incomplete unless you surrender to them your SS# !!

15. Some matches they send you suddenly disappear.

16. Most matches never respond, because they stop paying their fee, but Eharmony displays them as pending misleading you into thinking that they are still members while they are not paid members anymore and therefore until they pay again they have no way to respond to you.

17. Person's weight is not displayed. I ask not to match me with obese people yet they keep on sending me obese looking people.

18. No refund or billing policy is found anywhere on eHARMony.com

19. Eharmony does not maintain their email addresses. Provided email address failed when I emailed a support request to it.

20. Eharmony.com stopped working with Firefox in June 2008. I can't login to Eharmony.com using my favourite Firefox browser and their site opens with a blank page with a couple words on it identifying the error, but no actual error. Eharmony support promised to send a tech support email to me in 5 minutes, yet 6 hours later no such email and their site is inaccessible using Firefox.

21. Eharmony phone number is hard to find or actually nowhere to be found on their website even if you are a paid member.

22. Eharmony could see that certain kind of people close their match on me 100% of times, yet they keep on sending the same kind of people as my matches again and again (example: white U.S. women).

23. About 80% or more "matches" that they send you never respond and you will have to close that particular match probably by selecting "This match never responded to my request to communicate" before your "no response" and "CLOSED" match "portfolio" grows out of proportion...

I wanted to let you know that this story is almost exactly like the one I got from a guy I met on match.com. On match.com he put down he was native american. He says his mother is from Spain and Dad from USA. Grew up in England. His dad left him 1.9 million that he invested in this project in Lagos. I have never had anything like this happen to me before and am pretty gullible.

Says he is a civil engineer in Lagos, Nigeria finishing up a job with his 12 year old son that sits in a hotel room all day while he is at work. His son lost his wallet with $ 23,000.00 in it. He was planning on moving to California (where I live) when he collects 4.9 million for completing the project. But now they have no money to eat or stay in the hotel. He went to college in Manchester England, wife died in plane crash 6 years ago, parents both dead from car crash. So like an idiot I send him money via moneygram. Then a co-worker dies in a building collapses and he needs money to help pay for the burial. Then he send pictures of a bridge that is only partially done. This sender is DomainKeys verified"Jeff Smith" <smith49_loveall@yahoo.com. jeff smith
Lako Hotel - Maryland
lot 23 Awolowo Road G R A ikeja
Ikeja, Lagos 23401
Nigeria
This is the address he gave as to the hotel. This is the phone 011 234 (807) 606-1921
He always called me Angel - Hunne - spelling horrible and use of english even worse. The spell broke when he wanted a friends of his (a bank manager from Tucson AZ) to put $4,500.0 in my bank account. When I refused he didn't call for two days and then was VERY angry that I didn't trust him. I am out $ 2,000.00 but wanted to share this so that others would not suffer the same humiliation. This guy is good. He even sent me a plane ticket registration for him and his son. When I called the airlines - it was real reservation - but he just didn't make the flight. Now he says the project is taking much longer and he won't be back in the USA for another month. I stopped emailing and haven't heard back. Beware. Hope this helps someone else.
