Oh yes, western union is worthless, and I mean every part of it.

Recently we were in the market for some Apple Ipods. They were a good price, but not outrageoulsy good, so we decided to buy them. It came to a total of $800.

We emailed back and forth and we decided upons western union money transfer for the form of payment. These were the instructions sent to us:

1. Send the money to the wrong name and address.
2. Give the mtcn and sender's name to someone the seller.
3. She would check on the funds and then send us the Ipods.
4. We would go back and change the address and name to the right one and everybody would be happy.

We are very skeptical people and so we emailed western union about this several times. We asked if we gave someone the mtcn and sender's name, if there was any way that someone could pick up the money. They said no, the person would need an ID that matched exactly what the money transfer said. We also asked what one would need to pick up the funds. This is what they had to say.

Thank you for contacting Western Union. We are writing regarding your
inquiry.

A receiver may pick up their money transfer at any Western Union Agent
location in their area. They will need to complete a "To Receive Money"
form with the following information: name, address, amount expected, as
well as the sender's name, telephone number, city and state being sent
from. Valid identification is also required. Some restrictions may
apply.

If you have any additional comments or questions, please do not
hesitate to contact us at customerservice@westernunion.com.

Sincerely,
Ruben

Like many other financial institutions loose laws and many loopholes to crawl through give them the tools to allow the consumers to get ripped off with no consequences falling on the institution itself.

Short of a massive suit with lots of media coverage and majorly hounding senators and legislators I dont know what can be done. Sad but true.
