Post subject: Western Union Helps scammers-A Must Read
PostPosted: Sun Jun 15, 2003 10:12 am
I hope you can help with this. I would hate to see others get ripped off as I have by Western Union and someone in Italy. Western Union operator 112 told me to place the test question on my wire transfer so that only "I", It was sent in my name, would be able to pick it up the funds and then they gave my money to someone god know who they won't tell me anything.

Bob I am not willing to let this go until WU changes the policy on how money is picked up. The operator where I sent the money from made it clear that I would be the only one allowed access to my fund. They also did not have my sign the terms and conditions portion of the money transfer so I won't be held to their rules and guidelines on arbitration. I intend to get a class action suit together anyone you know that has been hit by WU please have them contact me at jamesstz@hotmail.com. This has been going on for far to many year to let it continue. I will be going back to the branch where I sent the funds from and see it I can get it on tape this time.

Here is my story:

It all started on 6/02/2003 when I placed a bid on E-Bay for a laptop. I received an email from an eBay member on 06/03/2003 who said he could get me a new Gateway 600 XL for $650.00. I had just completed a "buy now" on a 3 month old HP Laptop for a friend for the same price. I thought it would be great to upgrade my laptop and get one for my sister. He asked that I make payment through Western Union, as he was in Italy, and it would get the laptops to me faster. I will include the emails between us so I don't have to write it all in here.

So to make a long story a little shorter, I went to Western Union on 06/05/2003 to transfer the money to myself (Please see emails). I intended to change the receivers name after the laptops were delivered. At Western Union, I asked if there was anyway someone other than me could pick up the funds. The sales rep said no, they would have to have proper ID and that I could place a test question on this wire transfer and if the receiving party did not know the answer they would not be able to pick up the funds. The girl at Western Union wrote the test question on my wire transfer form and said that only I could receive the money but I could call in later and change the receivers name if I needed to. I kept my test question to myself just to be on the safe side.

I replied to the seller on 06/05/2003 letting him know the funds were sent and the MTCN number so he could track the transfer and verify funds made it to Italy. I waited for an email from the seller letting me know the UPS Tracking number so I could track the packages. I also kept an eye on the Western Union website and my money to make sure there was no funny business going on with it. I had been assured by Western Union that all fail safes were in place to protect my money. I thought the receiver would have to have proper ID and know the answer to the Test Question. On June 7, 2003 just before going to bed I checked the Western Union web site and found that my money had been paid out. It was gone and I had never left the state of Texas, made a change to the receiver's name or given out the answer to the test question to anyone, here or abroad. The seller abroad didn't even know I had placed a test question on the wire transfer.

I immediately called Western Union and asked them how they could release my funds to someone other than me, as stated on the Western Union form I used to send the funds. After all I sent the money to myself and I was still in Austin, Texas, nowhere near Italy. I was transferred to the fraud investigation department and spoke to a lady named Angie. She told me that it was my fault that someone other than me picked up the money I sent to myself and Western Union was not responsible for the mistake. I would have to contact my local law enforcement office and they would take care of it. Like the Police officers (in Austin) can go to Italy and track down this guy and get my money back. Angie told me this happened everyday and that the scam artists know Western Union's system and how it works. That's how they get away with it. Angie said I should know better than to send money to myself and Western Union would not be held responsible for my loss.

I have all supported documents that show I sent this money to myself and the request for a test question to be asked to the receiver. I have to admit that I knew there was a chance this guy was not for real but I was assured but Western Union that my money was safe and I alone could change the receiver name or pick up the funds.

Here are the E-mails between me and the seller.

Hi Robert,

Yes, I am interested in the Gateway 600XL But first I need to know if it has

any USB Ports? Also do you take American Express? 650 US dollars sounds

like it to good to be true how do you get them so cheap? Does it come with

an OS or will I have to buy one myself?

Thank you

Jim

Now I will make a short preview of my daily activities

and my family status.

My name is Robert Broaddus and I am 44 years old and

I work at a Best Buy similar location in Milano,Italy and

I have 2 girls of 18 and 19 years old both students at

dentar medicine.

But to get to the point, I work at a Best Buy similar

store and I am able to get these items and basically

any other item from best buy for half the price or

sometimes even cheaper.

These itemss are not stolen, they come with the store

receipt and a 2 year warranty. They are Brand New in

anything is wrong with it the warranty will cover it

or if you feel like you just dont want it return it

with the receipt.

As a shipping carrier i will use UPS services

were very fast and secure, and will be insured against damages,

double packed with anti-damage boxes and I will pay 100% for 2-3

days shipping so you can have it within 2-3 days after you make the payment.

The payment it will be done trough Western Union money

transfer because this is the fastest and safest way to

send the money ans also I have to buy the merchandise

first.

I'll wait your email with any questions.

Thank you

After you will send the money please send me the sender's name and adress as appears

on the money transfer request and the MTCN wich they

When you will go to the westernunion office to wire the mony

If they ask you that you can tell them that the money are for a

Robert,

I just don't feel comfortable buy these outside of ebay but it a great deal.

I'll take one and if all goes through. I'll get the other just to be on the

safe side. Six fifty is a lot less to lose than 1300. If the frist come

through with ease, how many can you get? I own a small Computer Support

Company and have 15 people on the road about 24/7 so these would come in

very handy and save me alot. I'll go to westren union today and email the

information to you.

Thank you

Robert,

I use to work very closely with Gateway. The company I worked for only used

their computers and I know the company very well. I know a way I will feel

very comfortable in buying them both. You said the you had access to the

computers at work so send me the Serial Numbers and I'll run a check on them

through Gateway they will be able to tell me were they are in the world and

when they were build and so on. It with only take me 10 minutes to verify

these numbers once I have them and I'll send the money that minute. I can

send it on line from my personal account.

Thanks

Jim

I have acces on them only if i pay for them.

I have another surgestion and I think I can trust in you.

You send the money to another name than mine.YOu can

send the money to your name for example. After that I

check the money and if they are there I will send you

the items. After you get them and you check them you will go

to a western union office and change the receiver name

to my name so that I will be able to pick up the

money.

So I am sure that you are a legitim buyer and you are

sure that I am not able to pick up the money.

If you send the money to your name here in Italy

nobody can pick it up.Or you can send the money to

your father's name or what name you chose.

I am sure that you will be satisfied.

Let me know asap to know what I have to do.

This is the last I heard from him. I thought, how could he get the money when Western Union assured me no one else would be able to pick up the fund unless they had proper ID and the answer to my test question which I'd not given out to anyone. Boy was that a $1392.00 mistake. The $92.00 is what Western Union Charged me for the wire transfer.

Thank you in advance for anything you can do to prevent this from happening to anyone else.

Sincerely,

James Stotz

damn. i could have fallen for it. the thing that might have stopped me is that warning from ebay, but he did come up with a plan that sounded fool-proof.

if the money was transferred from a credit card, contact the company and tell them the whole story. if it was transferred from a bank acct, contact the bank and do the same.

i can't believe wu told you no one but you could pick that up, and then they paid someone other than you, and they won't accept responsibility. i think they are trying to blow you off, hoping you'll give up. when you don't, they will pay up before going to court. if your bank or credit card company will help, great. if you have to speak to a lawyer, don't settle out of court unless you're reimbursed lawyer fees and you recover the entire amount! really! your case sounds legally cut and dried. i can't see how they can win, but you must not be intimidated, or they will win by keeping it out of court and not paying up. it's just a tactic, i'm sure of it! they will play it out for as long as it takes to break you, or realise you won't go away.

it took me a couple of months to break my bank's resolve when i got scammed, but i got pretty close to recovering the full amount. if i had been quiet and gotten it to court, i could have gotten back all, most likely, plus damages. but i didn't realise how scared they were of going to court, at the time. so i let them know i was seeking council and they broke down before it could get to court. but they fought hard to break me first!

good luck. i'm interested in knowing how this turns out!

You'll have to excuse me if I think that "Guest" is a bogus poster. I've seen that very same post (names and details changed) on other sites before.

Now, that having been said... IF you were truly scammed (yes I am a cynic, but like I said, I've seen that message posted elsewhere,) you were also warned. Ebay sent you an email, stating that the sellers account had been compromised. That should have set off a few red flags.

All in all, if that's all you lost, then you're better off than most people.

Although, my own personal advice? If a person is unwilling to register (not that that would solve the problem entirely) then their posts should be taken with a grain of salt. At the very least, when I was initially posting here, I took the time to put in some kind of name, instead of defaulting to "Guest".

Your resident cynic,

Spawn
