Heres my story. I hope whoever reads this could help put my mind at ease. I am so scared that I am going to become the suspect because the person I cashed checks for said if I file a police report which I did she will say I stole her checks.
I met this woman at a casino. she asked me if I would cash a check for her at my bank and in return she would give me 100 dollars cash for my trouble. She showed me her statement from her savings that said she had over 30,000 in it and it was linked to her checking. Her reasoning for not getting the money from her bank was that her husband would know she was gambling again and she didn't want that. So there we went to my bank and I cashed her check. The bank cashed a check for 2,500 when I only had 200 in the bank. I continued to cash checks for her all week. 8 of them totalling 15,000 dollars. On the last time we met I told her this was starting to feel suspiciious and that I do not want to cash any more and that is when she got very angry and said she was going to tell her bank the check book was stolen which she did. But she as far as I know has not reported it to the police. So all those checks came back to my bank as NSF and Stop Payments. Ofcourse I don't have that kind of money so I had to borrow it from family and paid the bank back and filed a police report. But my life is hell because I live every day in fear that the police when they question her will beleive her lies that I stole her check book. I am so scared. I am a single mom and was so stupid just to get a little extra money to trust this woman. I have called the detectives and my case has not been assigned to one yet. The case is in the fraud division. Any advice would be so appreciated. I am so tired of being scared. I almost wish I did not file a police report. I actually called to cancel it after she threatened me but they didn't cancel it. This was the hugest life lesson I just hope I don't become a suspect in the detectives eyes. I called the seargent and left a voice mail a coulple of days ago so did my grandma. That probably doesn't look good that she called but she is very concerned also. What can I do. Very very worried.

I don't think you have much to worry about as far as the scammer filing a police report as the checking account isn't even hers. Scammers threaten people to try and scare them into continuing the scam. You also don't have to worry about your bank pressing charges against you since you already paid them back.

I am sorry this happened to you.

As long as the money was paid back there is no victim, the state will not prosecute a financial crime if there is no monetary victim.

You just owe some serious money to your family.

But what if she lies and says I stole her check book. That is why I am so scared. The money is paid back to the bank but she said if I go to the police she will say I stole her check book. I did not do that. She took me to the bank or we met there everytime I cashed a check for her.

As long as the money is paid back to the bank you are fine like Reverse said. She is not out of any money since the account was closed. Like I had said before this person tried to scare you into continuing the fraud and will not go to the police.
