Another big trick around ebay and other auction sites is for the scammers to wait for an auction to end without a sale, they jump right in and try to get you to sell privately outside of the auction. Pass you a counterfeit check which you will not know it is bad until you have shipped the item off.
Here is what I suggest to anyone selling with auctions:
1. Never accept personal checks, if you accept a cashiers check or money order tell the buyer that you must wait for full clearance of the check or money order which could take up to 14 business days before shipping the item out. ( cya - put a statement to that affect in your payment options area as well that way you are covered should they try to complain).
2. If you do decide to accept a personal check, call the account holder NOT the bank to verify the check was indeed issued to you. Calling the bank will only tell you if it will clear the account, they have no way of knowing if the other party sent it to you or not. ONLY the account holder can tell you that they did or did not issue the check to you.
3. NEVER work a deal outide of an auction format. Ebay will not back you up if you get ripped off by the buyer if you sell outside of a running acution for the item.
4. International shipping is VERY risky, even taking payments from or making payments to another country with paypal is not backed by the payment service . They state in the agreement that you take on the risk if you choose to send money to or accept money from someone in a country other than your home country.
5. Be leary of email addressed from freebie accounts, buyers or sellers who are not willing to give you contact information, and buyers or sellers pushing to get an item sold or bought quickly. These and other signs are that of a potential scam.
