Post subject: | Has my identity been compromised? (2) |
Hi, I have been trying to share my apartment using a craigslist ad. Yesterday, a man wanted to see the apartment. However, he didn't show up at the appointment time and just called me saying that he didn't like the neighborhood. He has my name, my address, my phone number and he also knows my school name and occupation. I am pretty concerned about the status of my identity. If you could reply my question, I would be glad. Thanks, Semih |

This almost sounds genuine to me that he didn't like the neighborhood as it's not the usually "mode of operation" of a scammmer.... he also (I'm assuming) doesn't have any of your personal information? (soc sec number, birthdate etc)..... without that there's not much of a chance of your identy being compromised. In the future don't give out any information that's not associated with the room itself.... they don't need to know where you go to school or what your occupation is.... this would only give them an idea of what kind of money you may have and that's not a good idea.... insist on meeting at a public place first to discuss the room. I would also run a background check that you can do for relatively cheap online on anyone that you don't know who you may be considering to live in your home. Below is some good information that is posted on Craigslist that you should follow to protect yourself and your family: The overwhelming majority of craigslist users are trustworthy and well-intentioned. With billions of human interactions facilitated through craigslist, the incidence of violent crime has been extremely low. Nevertheless, it's very important to take the same common sense precautions online as you would offline. When meeting someone for the first time, please remember to: Insist on a public meeting place like a cafe Tell a friend or family member where you're going Take your cell phone along if you have one Consider having a friend accompany you Trust your instincts Taking these simple precautions helps make craigslist safer for everyone.
