While looking for information on fake checks I came across this article.

Frisco police are investigating a scam involving at least seven counterfeit “City of Frisco” checks. Police have received six reports of fake “City of Frisco” checks received in the mail recently by different recipients living outside Texas. And The Frisco Enterprise received one report independently and verified by police as consistent with those reported to them.

“There has been a report of six different individuals throughout the country receiving fraudulent checks from look-alike City of Frisco checks,” said Sgt. Adam Henderson, public information officer, Frisco Police Department. “Our detectives are currently investigating the ID theft to try to find the area of compromise and possibly charge the responsible party or parties if located.”

Henderson said there are no suspects as of 11 a.m. Thursday. The fake checks do closely resemble real city checks but there are some inconsistencies, Henderson said.

The Frisco Enterprise received an email from a Massachusetts man who forwarded copies of a letter he received in addition to a fake check. He asked his name not be used.

Although the gentleman had not as of Tuesday contacted Frisco Police, Henderson confirmed the documents the source forwarded were consistent with fakes police are investigating.

“In the mail, I received a check for $3,825.51 with the promise of another $29,174.49 due after I cash the check for taxes,” the Massachusetts man wrote. “I am just sending this as I know you never get money for nothing. Please pass this off to your readers, but don't use my name. I basically told them to kiss my a--.”

Henderson said other examples directed people to cash the check, keep $250 and send the balance back in a money order. If anyone had followed those directions, they could be on the hook for the whole amount.

As for a quick “CSI-episode” solution, Henderson said that’s not typical.

“Having worked white collar investigations for two years, I can tell you that 99.9 percent of the time fingerprints or other physical evidence from a check or letter will be impossible to obtain,” Henderson said.

“In all of these cases, the would-be-victims have touched the letters, passed them around to others to look at, etc. Evidence is damaged at that point,” Henderson said.

“Also, these types of cases normally involve persons outside of the area as the offenders. It's best to pick a ‘victim’ in another city or even state, as the chances of you being identified and arrested narrow. But, then again, you never really know [you won’t get caught].”

Police advise anyone who receives a “suspicious” check from the “City of Frisco” to contact their local law enforcement agency.

As this is a developing story, check back for further details as they are available.
