my situation is a bit different, I wasn't contacted via E-mail. I didnt get the money order though the mail. I put my car up for sale out of my own driveway for $800, it was a lincon town car and in fair shape, ran well. I was in a pinch, I needed $500 to pay my rent. My husband lost his job and we have two little girls one with Autism. Homelessness is not an option with a special needs child. My landlord had his back to the wall his wife and him going though an ugly divorse, he needed the money too. So when after a week of the for sale sign being there I get someone who comes to my door asking to buy my car with a money order for $950.00 who am I to figure something was wrong. He told us he was going to buy a diffrent car, but when he went to get it it was gone, and that he had a money order from his home state of Califorina. (which it was, a money order from a Safeway in CA.) I looked up money grams online, i double checked to make sure it had all the security features. It even had the little thermal sensitive spot. My husband took the money order and put it in our landlord's account. depositing $500 and keeping $450 for other bills. The bank cashes it without an issue. Yesterday evening my landlord comes buy with a note from the bank saying it was a fake. It is almost 10 days after it was deposited. His bank has frozen his accounts and given him 72 hours to make good on the $950. We decided to call the police, we reported what happened, and reported the car as stolden....but the cop had that look on his face that told me that We had been taken, and there probly isnt much we can do about it. I didnt expect something like this here in a small friendly mid-western city like Springfield, MO. I feel so stupid and nieve  (please parden the spelling, I have dislexia)

Did the man take the car? If the check was for $950 and you were selling the car for less, did you have to give some of that money back to the man?

The money order may have had "thermal sensitive spot" but I can assure you the spot did not work.

They never do on the counterfeits

actually the spot did work. it was the exact paper. but the routing numbers came back linked to a wells fargo account. it took the bank over a week to figure out it was a fake.

Yes he did come to my door, yes he did take the car. no he didnt ask for change, he offered me the whole $950 for the car. (i know that should have been a red flag the size of texas, but hindsight is always 20/20)

So if he has the car, can't you get the police to find that car to find the person who basically "robbed" you . . . he robbed you by giving you a bad check and taking the car.

I would also contact the Attorney General's office in your state. Also, contact the media. This would be a great story for a consumer alert. Heck, someone might even recognize the car if you can show a picture of it and help you track down this guy and bring charges against him.

We already reported the car stolden. And I have about a quarter of the city 'keeping an eye out" for my car. I'm not giving much hopes of the cops finding it, They almost arrested my husband for the theft becouse his SS# was on the money order (from when we cashed it) the cops almost arested him for stealing his own car! the car i bet is long gone, I'm more upsest about the bad blood between me and my landlord. I love this house, I don't want to leave this is the first place Ive ever lived where I actually felt home.(and I've lived in 4 different states and Canada). I don't feel right alerting the media, this is not how i want my 15 mins. of fame. If i go on the news over this I might as well put a sign on the roof that says "Easy Mark"

I can understand how you feel about the media angle. I do know that every time that we have been in the media, it has helped to save someone else from becoming a victim. And if you wanted to, you could ask them to hide your face.

And I was not really thinking that you could find the guy to get the car back . . . but then you would have a person standing there that you could identify as the person who gave you the bad check, and then you could have him charged with robbery . . . and maybe get some of your money back.

(if you change your mind about the media thing, let me know . . . I have some contacts in different states)

Did you contact the Attorney General's office in your state?
