I was contacted by someone that said they were with the United Nations and to contact a Dr. Richard Powell, that was back in September. I responded, but when they asked for money, I ignored it. Then about three weeks ago he contacted me and said he could get the money financed and I would not have to pay it back until I received my claim. They told me to open an account with a particular bank. I did, gave him the information and 1/2 of money appeared. I withdrew it and then sent him the money. Then more money was deposited in my account. I went to withdraw this money only to find out there had been a hold put on my account for fraudulent activity. I was not happy when I found this out, so I contacted him to let him know. He acted like he didn't know anything about it and was embarrased. I went back to the bank, only for the bank to tell me that if I did not return the money, they would prosecute me. Obviously I did not have the money! The Bank of Scotland London was also involved. So Beware. I couldn't believe it, they had the United Nations logo on each message I received from him.

I am sorry to hear that you ended up getting scammed. It is sad that the scammers will go to any lengths to get money from people, even if that means that they use logos and emblems of businesses and agencies that we trust.

I am going to use this as a chance to remind people to never go to a website that is listed in an email. If it says it is from a place like the United Nations, google it and find the actual United Nations website on your own and talk to someone there to find out if the email is legit. It is too easy for the scammers to use "copy/paste" to steal someone's logo and make a letter or website that APPEARS to be from the actual company.

I'm sorry to hear you got scammed, especially around the holidays. Try talking to the bank and show them the emails and see if they might work with you on paying the money back.
