Are there any guides on finding out whether an IDs or Driver's License is fake? I am aware that scanned images are pretty easy to retouch in Photoshop, etc., but are there any vital points that I can look out for when looking at a scanned US or UK ID/DL? I've seen sites that sell fake IDs at 20-30 bucks each, and as I get to check lots of IDs I need to make sure that it's not a fake one. I do catch sloppy 'Photoshopped' IDs regularly, but some give me the slip, unfortunately.

Thank you for your answers!

Talk to your local police station and ask them for an ID book (can't think of what it is called) but it shows what each states ID and DL's look like. They may not freely give it up so call from your place of employment and have them send a bunch to your work.

That is pretty difficult as I get to hanlde ID's from different states and from all over the world. Contacting police stations state to state or country to county would be a pain in the a##. Are there any type of algorithms that make up the serial numbers on the IDs? Some checksum or something? Like adding the date of birth to something else and dividing it by something else gives me the last two digits of the serial number for example?

Thank you for your help.

I found this awesome site:

http://www.highprogrammer.com/alan/numbers/index.html

# Driver's License Numbers - How to calculate and verify.

* Florida
* Illinois
* Maryland
* Michigan
* Minnesota (Prior to December 13, 2004 only)
* Nevada (Prior to January 1998 only)
* New Hampshire
* New Jersey
* New York (Prior to September 1992 only)
* Washington
* Wisconsin - With Pascal and Perl source code.

It has algorithms to decoding some US IDs by serial. Of course this info is accessible to fraudsters as well, unfortunately. Are there any free online checks or verifications?

Any other interesting stuff you'd recommend? C'mon Scam Victims, UNITE!

No don't contact them across the country. There is one book that shows ALL of the US ID cards and drivers liscenses and tells you what to look for to see if they are real or fake. Police stations readily have them on hand and will give them to businesses that deal with ID's. I can't think of the name of the book though. All you need to do is contact YOUR local police station. Yes there are different algorithms for each state. In WI the month and year of birth are in there, there is a number code in there saying if they are male or female and a couple of others. Each state has theirs set up differently.

ID Checking Guide

the algorithms you speak of for verifying numbers is a tightly guarded secret, I would be surprised if someone posted it on the net.

That's the book I was talking about. You can get them for free at your local PD.
