I got scammed with US Postal Service money orders. Has anyone had any experience with these? I mean, these are United States government documents that these people have altered. Any ideas? Thanks and sorry for the multiple posts.

Julie,
At this point many of the gangs have the capabilty of forging and printing almost everything. One way it works is that ne of the gang members purchases a money order for a minimum suma and then they "wash" or doctor it any way they want to. Some of these checks have also been stolen and doctored.
Since USPS money orders are cashed immediately with no holds it's a particularly nasty fraud because I'm sure it was not questioned when you presented it.
I think the key is in education. Foreign transactions must be considered suspect until proven otherwise. It's a shame to be paranoid, but the world is getting to complicated for us innocent types.
So sorry you got scammed!

I have heard of the scammers using money orders before, but not from the USPS. Although no longer a government entity, it is still a federal offense to tamper with mail or to commit fraud by mail, SO, I would recommend a call to your local post master to see if counterfeiting these would fall into that category as well...the worst he could say is "no"...

Yes in the past USPS money orders have been counterfeited or altered. You n eed to contact your area postal inspector and place a fraud complaint, have your documentation ready for viewing and as much detail about the timeline of events as possible to help them out.

Yes, Go to the USPS office where MO are issued, they can trace it with there computer and traced to the bank it was cashed. The bank will have the record of the person's ID and address.
