Whatever you do, do NOT call any phone number that he provides or that is on the check to "verify" the check . . . those could be fake. Look up the phone number to the bank/credit union on the internet on your own and call them.
Also, you could tell him that you will not give him the car until the check his HONORED. (read the info at the bottom of this page
