Rachels Toxic clearing House used a similair tactic to stop McDonalds using styrafoam by sending it all back to their HQ COD and it worked.
Below is the text of the last email from Courtney

Thanks for the information, your payment will be mailed first thing in
the morning . I will need you to hold the package on my behalf for
about a week till the payment arrives, and will like to inform you
that the check sent comes in excess (extra) funds ... this extra fund
in it will be for the Shipper.... who will be picking the item up...
which implies that as soon you get the check and cash it..You will be
deducting extra $50 for your own running around and the rest funds
will be sent via Western Union to my Shipper. I will send the Shipper
information to you a soon as the payment deliver to you, hope to hear
back from you now so that i we continue with the
transaction.........Regards.

OMG...I think I am in the middle of being scammed. Thank you so much for your site and this blog. The email you posted sounds exactly the same...even the "$50 extra dollars for my trouble". I am selling an item online for $2,700 and was mailed a check for $6,500. When I emailed the man and asked why it was so much he said the extra is for shipping (it is a big diningroom set) and to wired transfer so much to such and such shipper and then the remaining back to him. I had him send the check to my work because I thought it was odd that he wanted this item without seeing it and the check arrived Friday. I have not seen the actual check yet but was planning on taking it to the bank to verify tomorrow.
But from what I have read here on this site I am thinking I will just mail it back to him and tell him if he wants the diningroom set he can arrange shipping and wire me the $2,700 cash.
Or am I better off with the local auction house, who will come out to my house, look at the set, offer me a price, pay me cash and take it away that day?
I am so dissappointed but happy that I have not deposited the check. I need advice, I have never encountered this but my emails sound the same and the check being sooo much over the asking price...it just has to be a scam..right??

This sounds like it would be your best option. Even if you do not get the amount you are asking for at least you know the money is real.

I too am glad you did not cash the check. Victims are starting to be charge with fraud and other crimes when cashing what they beleive to be a real check. I think you should just shred the check and stop all contact with the scammer. And yes it is a scam.

It is a scam . . . 100% sure of it.

Cut off contact with the scammer. They will just try to tell you the check is real.
