I imagine that some victims have writen to their lawmakers asking for help. If so what is their response like? I recently picked up information (post office) about the rights of crime victims. http://www.crimevictims.gov. None of the situations seem to address victims of Nigerian fraud.

I would imagine that they would either 1) not respond at all or 2) say there is nothing they can do because the US does not have any jursidiction in Nigeria.

I have talked to people over the years about this, and while they cannot go and get the scammers or send someone to go and get them, they COULD make some consumer protection laws to help to decrease the number of people who become victims.

For example, if they made a law that when a person deposits a check the bank needs to tell them that may take 10 business days or more for the money to be verified as good, then a LOT less people would become victims.

Or if the goverment did public service annoucements about these scams, it would help get the word out there.

I think the consumer protection laws would be difficult to make, especially the banking one you mentioned because of the banking laws that state checks must be made available within a specific time frame (local checks need to have funds made available within 1 business day, non-local check funds need to be made available within 5 business days) so the banking laws would have to be changed along with others. I think the best thing would be for the government to do the PSA's like you mentioned and then have the banks educate the tellers on how to spot and/or question checks to see if they are bad before the deposit is even made.

What if we start with baby steps, like requiring them all to post a warning/sign like we were talking about in another message thread

I always like to think big too, but I have learned over the years to think big and then think again and scale things back. Some change is better than no change, and with baby steps we might actually get to the BIG thing some day anyway!

From past experience writing to members of congress usually yields two possible results. 1. No reply but your name gets put on the list for campaign mailers. 2. A reply that says
Quote:
"Name of congressman is working hard to serve his constituents and loves to hear from them. Your concern is his concern (one of his slogans from the last election) and he thanks you for taking the time to write him. Please remember this coming November that Name of congressman is your man in Washington (Another of his campaign slogans)".

Sincerely,
(obviously mass printed signature)

And your name gets put on the list for campaign mailers. :P
