If you go to your local bank, the teller can check their cashier check database or call the facility that the check was made at. I know for sure at the bank I use to work at that we kept a log of all cashier checks. When the teller calls, they can make sure that it was actually made at that bank and is still in open status. If worst comes to worst, you can always call the fraud hotline and check out the authency of the check. Don't forget to check the special water marks on the check. If you make a copy of the check on the copier, it shoud show up faintly. Don't be afraid to ask the bank if the check is for a huge amount or looks funny. They are train to detect this.

Why would you think a check that is for a "huge amount or looks funny" would be legit?

It is all well and good to ask a bank for help but chances are you will get no where fast and damage can be done before the fake is actually detected shouold it go through deposit process. Here are some good tips on what consumers should do to help prevent check fraud by detecting a problem early on.

Where did that check or money order come from? Where did those funds wired into your account come from?

ARE YOU LIABLE FOR THEM?

WARNING! "Cleared" does not mean the money in your account belongs to you.

WARNING! "Available funds" does not mean the money in your account belongs to you.

When you deposit a check into your bank account, your bank advances you the money for that check.

The money in your account is a no-signature loan from your bank.

The only time the money in your account really belongs to you is when the check or money order has been HONORED.

When in doubt, tell your bank to send the check or money FOR COLLECTION.

BY LAW YOU ARE LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE AND FULLY LIABLE

for any and all checks or money orders deposited into your bank account by you or someone else,

and for any funds wired into your account by you or someone else.

BY LAW YOU ARE LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE AND FULLY LIABLE

for any checks or money orders you cash anywhere.

WARNING! Funds wired into your account by a stranger may be stolen funds.

You and your account can be used for money laundering.

WARNING! NEVER accept 3rd party checks. A 3rd party check is one where someone else's name is on the Payee line.

WARNING! The ONLY way to verify any check or money order, including Cashier's Checks and Traveler's checks,

is to contact the account holder and and ask that the draft be verified against the ledger.

WARNING! You cannot accept payment in your name for the products and services provided by another

and deposit that money into your own bank account.
