Hi~
I'm new to this Forum. I'm glad I found it though.
My son posted his car up For Sale on the internet, he's only 17 and thinks he knows everything. Me, being the Mom knows nothing.
He received numerous e-mails from this person claiming that he wanted to buy his car and was sending a cashier's check in the mail. I didn't believe any of it and sure enough the check arrived yesterday 3/11/06.
The check was for $26,000 the asking price of his car was $19,000. Upon receiving the check, we should deposit/wire the excess funds which would be $7,000 to instructed Bank.
My son is 17, but he does have his acct. I did rip the check in half. I didn't want him to take to the bank and deposit it and then wire the funds on his own. I have never heard of this scam before, but we have never tried to sell a car on the internet either. Being that my son is so internet savvy, young, and gullible~We would be out $7,000. What are the proper ways of contacting the authorities on this situation?
Thank YOu

No loss no recourse, even if you lost the money, the thieves are in another country, no jurisdiction. You did the right thing.

Very common scam

If you WANT to you could go to http://scamvictimsunited.com/resources_ ... _check.htm and send all of the information that you have on the people who tried to scam you to all of the resources you see listed there. Since you did not actually lose any money, they may or may not take your information. Even for the people who DO lose money, their information is ususally just "filed" and they are left on their own to fight to banks on this or just pay the money back.

We are working with a reporter with the Washington Post to try and do a large story on this and bring more attention to it. Our hope is that some day there would be banking laws that would make it so that the money is not released to the customer until the check has been verified as legit.

I am glad to hear that your family did not get scammed. The best way for us to save others from becoming victims is to spread the word about this scam.

I was reading some of the information on
http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/class/scam/
and I noticed this about 3/4 of the way down the page . . .

. . . the checks all come in these long and slim brown envelopes like this one

The envelope there looks exactly like the one that our check came in, with the "return address" hand written on the flap of the envelope. I know that when we first started speaking with other victims out there many others also described this same sort of envelope . . . over the past 4 years this has been one piece of the scam that has remained the same.

Hello all, my first visit here and naturally, it is due to an attempted scam by some idiot to buy a car I have for sale online. Actually, it was two idiots.

I have below the source info for both of the emails, there were a couple sent by both of them, but these are the 2 I picked.

BTW, I found this forum by Googling the address they provided me. I then sent them an email with the Google results showing this forum and told em I was sorry I wasn't as dumb as they hoped I'd be. And a funny thing, tho, not really, both of the emails are virtually identical. So these morons use form scam emails?

Why am I not surprised?

I am glad that your Google search saved you from becoming a victim of this scam, but could I PLEASE ask that in the future you do not send links to this site to the scammers directly. If they want to find us, then can do so on their own, but we do not need to lead them here.

When our site first started we had some hackers TRY to take us down . . . we thought that it may have been the work of the scammers trying to get back at us for all of our work.

Thanks,

No problem, will avoid doing so in the future. Altho it's pointless to even reply to those idiots, I just wanted them to know people are onto them.

I understand. Many of us would LOVE to tell them off or reach through our computers and get our hands around their necks . . . hands come reaching out of tv's and computers in the movies . . . why can't we do that too!!!!!!!

Yeah, and get this, those clowns sent me an email saying I was being paranoid and gave me a number to call em. Now, you would think they may be smart enough to give me a number that at least was based in Canada, right? Especially since the addresses they gave me were both from there.

No, the phone number resolved to the UK!

Just goes to show you the level of intelligence for the average criminal. Sadly they will keep tryin to pull this scam and probably succeed at some point or another.
