Post subject:  Scamming tactics & how to prevent a scam.

1- If you are asked to send back money, you are being scammed.
2- If the check is for much more than the purchase price, it's a scam.
3- If the email addresses you as hello and not your name, it's a scam.
4- If someone wants to buy what you are not selling, it's a scam.
For instance, this is an actual email. I sell CD music albums only.
Hello, I was planning to buy 370 books but i have change my mind to purchase only 150 books and i had already sent a check of $4,000 to you
Thanks, Stella Smart
This is my reply- Our terms are to pay in advance the full cost of product plus shipping by certified check, PayPal or wire transfer. We will not return any portion of funding to you unless you return the product. If you did send $4000, that is an overpayment and we will return that check to you. Again, we do not accept overpayments. If your check is good (we find that out by contacting the bank the check was drawn on) your product will be shipped. ** I never heard back.
I have contacted three banks on cashier's checks. All three had me read to them the numbers on the check. In each bank they told me the check was counterfeit and not to deposit it in my bank. (Yeah, I've been approached three times in two weeks but I never bit.)
